Terms & Conditions 2027
This section also includes some useful information regarding food, accommodation and other practical issues.
1. About the course
Gather, Kindle & Craft is a five-weekend, year-long learning programme taking place between March and October 2027 in South Devon. The course is led by Daniel Blackmore and Hannah Walker and is based primarily at Bowden Pillars Farm near Totnes, with excursions to other local habitats including the coast and Dartmoor.
The programme is offered as one complete journey rather than as individual workshops. By booking, you are committing to the full five-weekend programme.
2. Course dates
• Spring : 26-28 March 2027
• Late Spring : 14-16 May 2027
• Summer : 9-11 July 2027
• Late Summer : 10-12 September 2027
• Autumn : 15-17 October 2027
The standard weekend timetable is: Friday arrival from 4:00pm, with the course formally beginning at 6:00pm. Dinner will be served at approximately 7:00pm. Teaching and fireside activities may continue into the evening. Saturday and Sunday teaching will run throughout the day, with the course finishing at 4:00pm on Sunday. Timings and particular activities may vary according to weather, seasonal availability, tides, site conditions and other circumstances beyond our control.
3. Booking and payment
A £200 deposit is required to secure a place on the course. The deposit is non-refundable, subject to any statutory rights you may have as a consumer.
The full course fee is £1,500.
If paying in full, the remaining balance must be paid by 31 January 2027.
If paying by instalments, the first instalment of £260 is due by
• 31 January 2027.
The remaining four instalments of £260 are due 14 days before each of the remaining course weekends.
The intended instalment dates are:
• 30 April 2027 - Late Spring weekend
• 25 June 2027 - Summer weekend
• 27 August 2027 - Late Summer weekend
• 1 October 2027 - Autumn weekend
Please arrange your own standing order or direct debit if helpful. We do not currently operate an automatic direct debit collection service; participants remain responsible for ensuring that payments reach us by the due dates.
A place is not considered fully paid until all payments due under the booking have been received.
4. Cancellation by the participant
Because this is a small-group programme requiring advance planning, staffing, materials, food and accommodation arrangements, cancellations can result in costs that cannot easily be recovered.
If you need to cancel, please contact us as soon as possible. The £200 deposit is non-refundable, subject to your statutory consumer rights.
For the remaining course fee, our cancellation terms are:
• More than 8 weeks before the first course weekend: the £200 deposit is retained; any additional course fees already paid will be refunded.
• Between 8 and 4 weeks before the first course weekend: 50% of the total course fee (£750) is payable.
• Less than 4 weeks before the first course weekend: the full course fee (£1,500) is payable.
If you have paid more than the applicable cancellation amount, we will refund the difference. If you have paid less, the outstanding balance will remain due.
If you are unable to attend an individual weekend, we are not normally able to provide a partial refund or transfer that weekend to another date, because the course is designed and priced as one continuous programme.
If we are able to fill your place with another suitable participant, we may, at our discretion, refund some or all of the amount you have paid, less any reasonable costs we have incurred. This is not guaranteed.
5. Cancellation or alteration by us
We reserve the right to alter the programme, location of an activity, timings or particular course content where reasonably necessary because of weather, seasonal availability, safety, access, environmental conditions, illness or other circumstances beyond our reasonable control. We will make reasonable efforts to provide an appropriate alternative activity or experience.
If we have to cancel the entire course before it begins, we will offer either a full refund of payments made to us or, where mutually agreed, transfer the booking to a future course. Our liability in such circumstances is limited to payments made directly to us for the course, except where the law requires otherwise.
If an individual weekend has to be cancelled or substantially curtailed after the programme has begun and cannot reasonably be rearranged, we will discuss an appropriate remedy with affected participants.
6. Camping and accommodation
Camping at Bowden Pillars Farm is included in the course fee.
Participants are responsible for bringing their own suitable camping equipment unless otherwise agreed with us.
There are a limited number of spaces for campervans.
Please contact us in advance if you would like to bring a van; spaces cannot be guaranteed.
If you prefer to arrange your own accommodation locally, this is at your own expense and you are responsible for making your own booking and transport arrangements.
The course is a full-time residential-style programme. Participants camping at the farm should arrive from 4:00pm on Friday so that everyone can settle in before the course begins at 6:00pm. Dinner will be served at approximately 7:00pm. Evening teaching and fireside activities may continue until around 9:00pm. Morning teaching will begin at 9:00am on Saturday and Sunday, and the course will finish at 4:00pm on Sunday.
If you live locally or arrange alternative accommodation, you are still expected to participate in the full course programme.
Please be on site by 8:30am each morning so that everyone can prepare and start the day together at 9:00am.
You should also be on site promptly for the Friday 6:00pm start.
7. Food, foraging and wild plants & fungi
Foraging and working with wild plants and fungi carries inherent risks, including the possibility of allergic reactions, adverse reactions, contamination, misidentification and, in the case of some species, serious illness or poisoning.
We will provide instruction on identification, responsible harvesting, preparation and use of wild foods. Participants must follow the instructions given by the course leaders and must not eat, taste or use any wild plant, fungus or other foraged material during the course unless it has been specifically identified and approved for consumption by a course leader.
Participants must never assume that a plant, fungus or other wild material is safe to eat simply because it has been discussed, displayed or collected during the course.
Information shared during the course is educational and is not a substitute for independent identification, medical advice or professional healthcare. Participants remain responsible for any wild food they choose to consume outside the course and should obtain independent expert identification before consuming wild plants or fungi they have collected themselves.
We cannot guarantee that every participant will be able or willing to consume every food prepared during the course. Please tell us about allergies, intolerances, dietary requirements, relevant medical conditions or other concerns before the course begins.
8. Health, fitness and participation
The course takes place outdoors and will involve uneven ground, woodland, fields, mud, weather exposure, carrying materials, walking, camping, fire, knives and other hand tools, wood carving, weaving, cooking, fungi and plant harvesting, and occasional excursions to coastal or moorland environments.
Participants are responsible for informing us before the course of any health, mobility, allergy, dietary or other circumstance that may affect their safe participation. We will make reasonable efforts to accommodate disclosed needs where practicable.
Participants must follow reasonable safety instructions given by the course leaders. If a participant's behaviour or condition creates a significant risk to themselves or others, we may ask them to stop an activity or, where necessary, leave the course. Any decision will be made with safety in mind.
9. Fire, knives, tools and other practical activities
The course includes practical activities involving fire, knives, axes or other tools and natural materials. These activities will be introduced and supervised appropriately for the group and the conditions.
Participants must use equipment only as instructed and must not undertake unsupervised activities involving fire, blades, tools or other potentially hazardous materials on the course site.
Participants are responsible for bringing suitable clothing, footwear and personal equipment for the weather and activities. We will provide further kit guidance before each weekend.
10. Personal property
Participants are responsible for their own personal belongings, vehicles, camping equipment and valuables. We are not responsible for loss, theft or damage to personal property except where liability cannot lawfully be excluded.
11. Insurance and liability
Daniel Blackmore and Hannah Walker each hold public liability insurance up to £5 million.
Participation in outdoor activities necessarily involves some inherent risks. We take reasonable steps to plan activities safely, provide appropriate instruction and manage foreseeable risks. Participants are expected to follow safety guidance and take reasonable care of themselves and others.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot legally be excluded or limited.
To the extent permitted by law, we are not responsible for loss or damage arising from a participant's failure to follow reasonable instructions, deliberate or reckless behaviour, or use of equipment or wild foods contrary to the guidance provided.
These terms do not remove or restrict any rights you have under UK consumer law.
12. Participant conduct
We want the course to be a safe, inclusive and supportive environment. Participants are expected to behave respectfully towards other participants, the course leaders, the land, local communities and the natural environment.
We reserve the right to ask a participant to leave the course where their behaviour creates a serious or ongoing risk to themselves or others, or where they engage in abusive, threatening, discriminatory or otherwise seriously inappropriate behaviour.
Any decision to remove a participant will be made reasonably and with regard to the circumstances. No refund will normally be provided where a participant is removed because of serious misconduct or a serious breach of these terms, subject to applicable law.
13. Alcohol, drugs and smoking
Because the course involves camping, fire, tools, wild food and outdoor activities, participants must not be intoxicated while taking part in teaching or practical activities.
Illegal drugs are not permitted on the course. Alcohol should not be consumed before or during activities where impairment could create a risk to the participant or others. Smoking and vaping are not permitted around fires, cooking areas or in any designated no-smoking areas.
14. Under-18 participants
The course is primarily designed for adults. Participants under 18 may be considered on a case-by-case basis and must contact us before booking. Where we agree to accept a participant under 18, we may require written consent and relevant emergency information from a parent or legal guardian, together with any additional safeguarding arrangements we consider appropriate.
Specific arrangements for camping, supervision, activities and safeguarding will be discussed and agreed before the booking is confirmed.
15. Safeguarding
We are committed to providing a safe and respectful learning environment. Where under-18s attend, appropriate safeguarding procedures will apply. Course leaders hold DBS checks and we will take reasonable steps to safeguard children and adults at risk participating in the programme.
16. Accessibility and additional needs
Please contact us before booking if you have accessibility requirements, mobility considerations, dietary needs or other circumstances that may affect your participation. We will discuss what adjustments may reasonably be possible within the outdoor and residential nature of the course.
17. Complaints
If you have a concern during a weekend, please raise it with Daniel or Hannah as soon as reasonably possible so that we have an opportunity to address it. If the matter cannot be resolved during the course, please contact us in writing as soon as possible afterwards.
18. Agreement
By submitting an application and paying the deposit, you confirm that you have read and understood these Terms & Conditions and agree to be bound by them, subject to your statutory rights as a consumer.
We may update these terms where reasonably necessary. Any material changes affecting an existing booking will be communicated to affected participants.
